BNSF's Kootenai River Sub
Join LCRV as we take you on a tour of one of BNSF's lesser known, yet highly scenic portions of the ex-Great
Northern. Sandwiched in between the busier "Funnel", also known as the Spokane Sub to the west, and the Hi
Line Sub across Marias Pass to the east, BNSF's Kootenai River Sub is packed full of scenery, set amid river valleys, mountainous
terrain, and wide open spaces. Beginning in Sandpoint ID, the Kootenai River Sub runs approx. 185 miles to Whitefish,
MT. You'll see trains crossing the 1 mile long bridge over Lake Pend Oreille at Sandpoint, the rugged Deep Creek
area near Naples, and the Kootenay River valley east of Bonners Ferry. Once into Montana, we follow the line through
Troy, Kootenai Falls and into Libby. The Libby Dam just Northeast of town forced the relocation of the mainline away
from the Kootenay River, ending the lines roughly 50 mile journey alongside one another. We shoot from several other
locations, including the nearly 7 mile long Flathead Tunnel, before ending our tour of the Kootenai River Sub at Whitefish.
Amazing scenery, endless locations, and plenty of traffic makes the Kootenai a railfan's dream. Pinch yourself if you
must, but your not dreaming. We’re bringing the spectacular Kootenai River Sub, right into your living room.
